I get knocked down ....but I get up again. As outlined to some of you beforehand, FDB HAS been taken offline as a result of a massive denial of service attack.
This is where the server is flooded by hundreds of thousands of requests to load the page, thus eating up bandwidth and forcing the webhost to take the server offline.
Most DoS attacks do a few hundred dollars worth of damage and some run into the thousands.
The attack which we got hit with last night is one of the biggest in the last decade. The people who hit us did $50,000 worth of damage.
Duck Monster knows more about these things than I and he explains it thus:
For 2 days our websites been down. We have found out it was due to a DDOS (distributed denial of service attack) on the server.
At 2 megabit, thats one gigabyte of data every 4 or 5 seconds. The attacks been going for over 24 hours. Which adds up to potentially up $50,000 of damage if charged at the full rates. Insurance at the server end of things covers it all though.
This is big. Our pipes were hosted further upstream in the US so there is the possibility of FBI involvement in this incident. We were slammed with the entire bandwidth capacity of a major university in this attack. We should feel strangely proud in a way, it looks like every Nazi who can click a mouse took part in this one. Of course we have our strong suspicions as to the point of origin but we'll leave that for Interpol to sort out.
So that is where we are at people. OF COURSE we will be back online, it just might take a while.
For the time being, we have reactivated the blog
This one is far from over.
